Electric-Lighted Locomotives

In accordance with the policy of the Railway Department of bringing all locomotives throughout New Zealand to the modern standard of equipment, engines used on the GisborneMotuhora line are to be equipped with electric headlights. The first locomotive fitted in this way was given an initial trial last evening, the tests proving highly satisfactory. The Pyle National headlight equipment is operated by the driver by means of switches placed above his head in the cab, and permit of a complete blackout, a half-black-out, and full illumination, according to requirements. The engine was fitted by Mr. A. C. Stewart, of the Hutt workshop staff, assisted by Mr. A. J. Jolly, a fitter in the Gisborne workshops. Other engines are to be fitted, and further trials probably will be held next we£R,"iff tH6 presence of the district lighting controller.
