LEADER OF “EAGLES”

YOUNG AMERICAN PILOT (British Official Wireless,) Reed. 2 p.m. RUGBY, Nov. 19. A 23-year-old American pilot from Utah has been appointed to command the first American Eagle fighter squadron. Squadron-Leader S. T. Meares, the English leader of the Eagle squadron and the Californian, Pilot-Officer R. O. Scarborough, were killed in a collision in a practice flight over Britain. Squadron-Leader Meares won the Distinguished Flying Cross as leader in 28 operations over enemy territory.
