EMPIRE BANDS

CONCERT IN EGYPT (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.) CAIRO. Oct. 4. Representing England, ■ South Africa, New Zealand and Egypt, there was a unique gathering of bandsmen at a British barracks square on a recent afternoon, when a special “Calling England” massed bands programme was recorded and relayed through the Egyptian State Broadcasting Service. Peaked hats, tarbooshes, field service caps and topees were quaintly clustered together, the scarlet head-dresses of the Egyptian military bandsmen adding a colourful effect in striking contrast to the drabber khaki. Commencing with an introductory number specially composed by a sergeant in the Cairo sub-area (English) Band, the programme swung into a series of well-known war songs, such as “Take me (Back to Dear Old Blighty”. Adding a Highland air to the proceedings, the New Zealand Camp Pipe Band contributed a stirring marching solo.

Thus, through music another link was formed among four nations, three of which stand side by side in the Middle East already allied in arms.
