PILOT AWARDED D.F.M.

BOMBER’S ENGINES FAIL DIFFICULTIES OVERCOME (Reed. Nov. 1, 2.15 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 31. Sergeant Allan George, Royal New Zealand Air Force, of Hawera, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. The citation says: “Sergeant George piloted a bomber attacking Duisberg one night in October. After passing over the Zuider Zee on the outward flight, both engines of the bomber began losing power and the plane was unable to maintain height. “Despite the disability, Sergeant George resolutely continued the flight towards the target, 'where he released a very heavy bomb, although subjected to accurate and intense antiaircraft fire. Although further handicapped by an unserviceable radio transmitter, Sergeant George skilfully flew the plane back to the base.”
