IMPREGNABLE ROCK

DEFENCES OF GIBRALTAR FUTILE ITALIAN RAIDS LONDON, Oct. 29. Some details of the growing defences of Gibraltar have been given by a detachment of Royal Canadian engineers, who have returned to England. During their voyage back the detachment incidentally witnessed the sinking of a German supply ship by a British warship. The warship, accompanying another, in which were the Canadians, caught the enemy ship by surprise in the Atlantic and sank it by gunfire. The Canadians poured scorn on Axis claims to have successfully raided Gibraltar. They said there was little ■ enemy activity around the fortress during their stay. The air raid sirens sounded only a few times, and in three of the raids Italian aircraft dropped bombs in the Mediterranean, and on La Linea and Kalaga, in Spain. The Canadians were working on the huge Gort hospital, named after the Governor, Viscount Gort, V.C. The hospital, like many other things in the fortress, is built entirely underground. “The big Rock is a pile bristling with guns and defences,” said one Canadian. “It will take some siege to push out the British and the Canadians.”
