SAMOAN GUARANTEE
VISITORS’ DEPARTURE NEED OF £250 DEPOSIT (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The objective of the Samoan quarantine amendment order, 1941, issued with last night’s Gazette, is to prevent the introduction of malarialbearing mosquitoes irito Samoa. These insects are knoWn to exist in other Pacific islands to the west, but so fbr have not penetrated tp Samoa, and the regulations give the chief medical officer wider powers to require the fumigation of island trading vessels, etc., the emptying of water carafes on such vessels, and generally ensuring that such unwelcome visitors are not introduced to the islands by shipping or other means.
Another set of regulations dealing with unwelcome visitors, but of the human species in this instance, to Samoa, is the Samoa immigration amendment order, 1941, which was also gazetted last night. Hitherto it has been necessary for a person landing in Samoa from a visiting ship to lodge a deposit of up to £SO or a return ticket to the port from which he came to the islands, unless he was departing by the same ship.
It has been found, however, that this sum has proved insufficient to cover the expenses of undesirable visitors who have worn out tlieir welcomes in the islands and whom the Administration 'has found it expedient should leave. The amount of deposit, therefore, has been increased to £250.
A further point in these regulations covers voyagers in such small vessels as yachts who have outstayed their welcomes, and these people will in, future be required to observe the same procedure as those landing from larger ships.
