At its monthly meeting yesterday the Wairoa County Council decided to support the nomination of Mr. W. A. Tod. Otane, for election to the Howard Estate Advisory Board. —Special. Lieutenant B. F. Scents, of the New Zealand Staff Corps, who graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, early in June, lias returned from special duly with the Australian Imperial Force and is spending his leave with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Scents, Richardsons avenue. Mr. Patrick Joseph O’Kane, Wairoa. who lias been elevated to the Upper House, was born in Londonderry. Ireland. in 1884 and educated at St. Columba’s School, Ballerin. He spent six years in the wine and spirit business, becoming manager for .1. McEntee and Company and later for Kinahnn Bros., Belfast. He arrived in New Zealand in ISIO7 and spent two years on Marakakaho station, learning farming, then 10 years witli Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Limited, at their Pakipaki, Belfast, and Waitara freezing works, as departmental foreman. For four years he was secretary for tiie combined industrial employees at Pakipaki, Tomoana, North British and Whakatu freezing works. He served overseas, 1014-18, and was made a justice of the peace in 1924. He lias been a member of the Wairoa Farmers’ Union for more than 20 years, being president in 1937-88. He is an executive member of tlie Primary Production Council, Government nominee on the Wairoa Harbour Board, and also Government nominee on the Gisborne Land Board. Since 1937 lie lias been president of the Frasertown branch of tlie Labour Party. He is in the Home Guard, and has been commander of the Frasertown unit, recently being promoted to headquarters, Wairoa Battalion. —Special. j
