ROMAN CATHOLIC VIEW
The day of national prayer, to bo observed on Sunday at the request of His Majesty the King, is commended to the clergy and people of the Auckland Roman Catholic Diocese by Bishop Liston in a circular letter directing solemn acts of intercession for God’s protection and the blessing of peace. “The length of the struggle and its civilised barbarity will make us see, if we but open our eyes in prayer, that we stand most in need of the mercy of our heavenly Father,’’ the bishop writes. “Forgetfulness of Him; pride of life; wills hardened in evil; bad example, especially by parents; the sins everywhere that are an insult to the Divine Majesty—these, even among the great issues of the day, are the chief troubles of the world, calling for prayer and penance. Spiritual remedies, it is true, are not all; men, wise and good, must work out life’s problems. There is no one magic formula for the cure of our ills. But the truth remains, spoken by our Lord: ‘Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you.’ “Let us welcome tire national day of prayer and make it a renewal of our spiritual life. Let the day bring more fervour into our prayer for an honest, wise peace, that will bring order and right living into the world of men. That is the only kind of peace that will last, and we cannot ask the just God for any other.”
