Unusual Visitor An unusual visitor to Gisborne in the form of the long-tailed cuckoo was heard in the native bush plantation in Anzac Park during the week-end. The Kniti resident who reported the visitor to-day stated that the shining cuckoo had been known to come to Gisborne occasionally, but 'he had not noted the presence of the long-tailed variety before. Another unusual point is that the visitation is about six weeks earlier than the recognised time for the commencement of the migration to this country, and the cuckoo is seldom heard before the end of September. The arrival of the cuckoo is looked forward to by those who follow the bird's movements, for an early appearance is believed to herald an early spring. National Savings Appeal An appeal to the people of the Dominion to support the national savings campaign in still greater numbers was made by the chairman of the National Savings Committee, Mr. T. N, Smallwood, in a national service broadcast last evening. Mr. Smallwood stated that so far there were 200,904 national savings accounts and the committee was appealing tor another 50,000 without delay. When this number was compared with the number of households and the population of the Dominion this goal was very modest, he thought. “The second objective of the committee.” said Mr. Smallwood, “is to raise £3,000,000 from national savings during the year ended March 31, 1942. So far £2,526,003 has been raised, of which £1,204,607 has been received lor the current financial year. The third objective is to raise £10,000,000 by means of a war loan by September 2.”
