MARIST NARROWLY
SENIOR RUGBY WIN CELTIC ONE POINT DOWN The one senior match played on the Gisborne Oval on Saturday under the Poverty Bay Rugby Union was a knock-out competition game between Marist and Celtic. After leading by a substantial margin until the last quarter, Marist finally emetged one point to the good. Scores: —• Seniors.—Marist 17, Celtic l(i. Juniors.—Old Boys 8, Marist (1. Fourths.—Old Boys A 20, High School 3: Marist 5, Old Boys, B nil. Picnic Football There was a picnic flavour about the senior match between Marist and Celtic, and it was not until the last few minutes that the pressure went on hard. Both teams were reinforced by newcomers to their ranks, and these players had a good deal to do with the progress and scoring in the match. Marist opened the scoring with a try by B. Quinn, which Pallium converted with a nice kick from a difficult angle. Celtic eliminated their opponents' lead when Flood got over near the corner, and Carrington added the extra points. After a period of back-aml-forth play, chiefly among the forwards, Marist went ahead with a try by Duckworth, who followed up well; and Pahura again made a good kick, to bring the score to 1(1—5, there being no change up to the interval. Hawea scored an unconverted try for Celtic soon after the change-over, and Quinn answered with a brilliant run from near half-way, after accepting a clearing kick from a Celtic back; his try being unconverted, too. Marist extended their score to 17—8 when Richards goaled a drop-kick from the field, and after that Celtic settled down to business in earnest. Flood got a good try, his second of the match, and then E. McKinley went over the Marist line near the posts, Carrington converting. This brought the score to 17—16 in favour of Marist, and Celtic were attacking strongly when the final whistle went. Two or three unsuccessful attempts at field goals cost Celtic opportunities when they were near the line at different times. Mr. H. Hunter was the referee. Marist Juniors Beaten ' The only junior match, between Old Boys and Marist, was won by the former by eight points to six. The scores comprised two tries, one converted, for Old Boys, and one try and one penalty for Marist. The scores represented the run of play fairly accurately, though Marist were unlucky not to establish a good lead in the first half. They scored first, with a penalty goal by Plane, and the second half was well under way before Old Boys got on the board. Steed got a try, and Davis converted, giving their side a lead. Then L. Candy scored for Marist, and for the remainder of the game Old Boys pressed strongly, White scoring in the nick of time to avert a Marist win. Good forward and back play was seen in both teams, Marist being the better balanced. A good deal of high tackling was noticed in the Old Boys’ back division. Mr. K. R. Waite was the referee. Fourth Grade Old Boys A 20 (Waldoek two tries, a penalty and a conversion, Atkins, Hickman and Cooper a try each), High School 3 (WiddowHon a try) ; Marist 5 (Shone a try and Blanc a conversion), Old Boys B nil. The referees were Messrs. A. Gabolinscy and G. A. Read.
