ATHLETIC CONTESTS MCANENEY IN SPRINTS In bulletins issued by the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Official News Service, dealing with the activities of New Zealand soldiers in the Middle East there appear the names of men familiar to followers of athletics throughout New Zealand. The Gisborne runner and footballer, A. E. McAneney, took part in the sprint races at an athletic carnival held late in July. He was placed second in his heat of the 100yds. championship event, which was won by Masters, an all-rounder who beat F. Sharpley, former New Zealand amateur champion, in the final of the event. Sharpley, who will be remembered as an outstanding athlete who represented the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay centre at the New Zealand meets in the seasons immediately prior to the war, won the 200yds. hurdles in 30 2-ssee. Allen, Empire Games representative from New Zealand, won the 880yds. flat race in 2.15 9-10. Masters’ time for the 100yds. was 10 2-ssec. This athlete won the hop-step-and-jump, and also the long jump.
