GISBORNE HOCKEY

LEADERS WIN AGAIN REP. MATCH DATE Greater interest was given to Saturday's hockey gnines on the Childers' Rond Reserve by the knowledge that the Napier sub-association had offered either next Saturday or the following Saturday for visits from the Poverty Bay men and women’s representative teams. The positions of the teams remained unaltered by the win of United in the men’s section and by a draw played by Waituhi in the women’s division. The teams now have the following points:—Men: United, 20; Waituhi, 16; High School, H; Foresters, it); Caledonian, 9; Wesley 3. Women: Waituhi, 23; Kia Toa, 15: Awapuni and Y.M.P. 5. Some of the teams found themselves short of players, and had to fall back on some who had ceased to actively participate. Among them was W. Hullivaut, chairman ot (he association, 11. Le Bus. former chairman, and ('. Burkinshaw. Saturday’s results were:- — Men. —High School 1, Waituhi nil; United 2. Foresters nil; Caledonian 0, Wesley 3. Women.—Y.M.P. 2, Waituhi 2; Kia Toa 9, Awapuni nil. Boys.—lntermediate A 5 (English 2. Gray 2, Brown 1), Intermediate B nil; High School 15 5 (lievell, Warren, Hickman, Wilcox and Quigley), Intermediate C nil. . Girls.—Red nil, White nil; ’Central S (McGregor 2 and Nicol), Blue nil. Close Men’s Games Neither United nor Foresters fielded their strongest teams. and although a hard game resulted it was not hockey at its best. Both sides indulged in hard hitting, although at times the United forwards gave a good exhibition of positional play. ft was not these movements, however, which contributed to the scores, which came in the second spell from a penalty bully taken by Nicoll and then n penalty corner, this goal being hit in by Lynsky. Both these men were the most prominent in their . departments, halves and full-backs respectively, while Roderick gave a good performance in the forwards. Watchman was in form at full-back until he went into the forwards towards the close in an endeavour to pull the game out of the lire. Although going into the field with only four men and completing the match with eight, Waituhi put up n game fight against High School, who won by only one goal to nil. The stout defence by Tupnra and Kaitipa kept the High School forwards out for the greater part of the game, tile only score coming when Ria broke away to outpace the opposition and tup the ball into an empty net. The schoolboys were handicapped by the placing of the Waituhi back, who frequently put the opposing forwards off-side, and many good centring hits from Roos, on the right wing, went to waste because .of this. . Caledonian put up a big score of lime goals against Wesley’s three m a game in which the defence was weakened on eac.i side. Scorers for Caledonian were lurbitt !l, Frccbnirn 2. Crothers 2 and Taylor I. while Stokes, Hickman and Beach goaled for Wesley. Women’s Leaders Draw Waituhi had another close call in the Women’s section, but maintained their unbeaten record by a draw with ' ■ M ' l :■ '’V*' all. Both teams played short. At tin interval, Y.M.P, led by one-ml, and alter a goal apiece early in the second spell instill in front with three minutes to go. when. Waituhi scored the i-f|ua I > s *‘ r - =?'Y i’ J. Smiler secured both goals fin \\ aitulii. while Mrs. Nicol and Miss J. Greig netted the Y.M.P. goals. . Kia Toa had an easy victoi j <>' Awapuni by nine goals to nil, six of them being secured in the first half. Awapuni played four short. Goals were scored b. Mesdames Le Bas 4, Watts Honan -, amt Sangwell 1.
