CLAIM FOR SALARY

TEACHER’S DISMISSAL HAWKE’S BAY BOARD OBJECTORS TO SERVICE (Special to the Herald.) NAPIER, this day. Further matters in connection with the dismissal of teachers who had figured in recent objections to military service on conscientious grounds were brought before the Hawke’s Bay Education Board at its monthly meeting yesterday. Congratulations were extended to the Hawke’s Bay board by the Gisborne Intermediate School Committee on the prompt and efficient action taken by the board in dealing with recent cases of conscientious objectors to war service. At the ’same time the Nelson Education Board, in expressing its congratulations to the board on its decision to terminate the ehgagement of one of its teachers who had appealed against service on conscientious grounds, expressed the opinion that no person who was unwilling to render military service, or otherwise furnish evidence of unqualified loyalty to King and Empire, should be employed by the Government, and perhaps even more particularly in the teaching profession. Should the Nelson board be faced with a case or cases similar to that in Hawke’s Bay, it would have no hesitation in following the Hawke’s Bay board’s example. A letter was read from Mr. Bernard Tunnicliffe, assistant teacher at Kaiti, stating that he was unable to teach after the end of July owing to circumstances over which he had no control. Additional Salary Formerly teacher at Ti Tree Point, Mr. Norman J. F. Senk submitted correspondence to and from the New Zealand Educational Institute and from the solicitors to the institute regarding the institute’s claim for payment of additional salary on behalf of Mr. on the grounds that his appointment as teacher of the Ti Tree School was not property terminated. The institute claimed that Mr. Senk asked to be relieved of his duties at Ti Tree Point only on condition that he was transferred to another position. The board was advised by its solicitors'that Mr. Senlc’s engagement was-: properly terminated by the board.

A letter \yas received from Mr. B. G. Me Alpine; ,w:ho was selected and appointed as teacher at East Cape, stating that judging .from recent actions of the'.board it may now consider him unsuitable as he was appealing at the next ’Gisborne sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board and was objecting to military service. He regretted that his statement should in any way influence the judgment of the board as he was sure that contact having already been made with the parents no unpleasantness would arise. The board decided that the appointment should not be proceeded with.
