TRADE BALANCE

SURPLUS OF £19,581,000 EXPORT TOTAL £65,766,000 With a total value of £65,766,000 exports for the 12 months ended June 30, corresponding to the season of production and export, were £93,000 below those for the 'previous season. Both figures are at an exceedingly high level judged by the average for the past 10 years, during which the returns for exports have tnly once really approached the levels of the last two. That was in 1936-37, when the total was £64,621,000. While imports for the season were £115,000 higher in value than for the preceding year, the total is still more than £10,000,000 below that for 193839, and is, in fact, smaller than for the two seasons previous to that. The visible commodity balance, at £19,581,000, is still well above the majority of those recorded in the past 10 seasons, being exceeded only last year and in 1934. Returns for commodities, valued in New Zealand currency, in the last 10 seasons have been:—

Returns of overseas trade for June, a summary of which was issued in Wellington this week, show exports to have fallen by £4,181,000, compared with the figure for the corresponding month last year. That, however, was an exceptional total, probably resulting from a special concentration of shipping at the time. Imports for the month were £1,216,000 lower than for June last year, but, in consequence of the much greater fall in exports, the balance at £1,630,000 is lower by £2,965,000. The export and import figures for June in the past five years have been as. follows:
