EXTENSION OF HOURS
SHEARERS & SHED HANDS INCREASE IN WAGES (Per Press Association.} CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Shearers’ hours have been increased for this season to meet the position arising Ironi the shortage oi shearers, stales the annual report of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union. The rate Jor shearers has been increased bv (id per 100 and the wages of shed hands has been increased by Is (id weekly, or id an hour. The report stales that the union reached an agreement with the New Zealand Workers’ Union for an increase in hours from 44 a week to 43 hours 20 minutes, and also for an extension of the cut-out period when shearing wet ewes from 15 to 30 minutes, when the time is required to complete the cut-out. “This extension to meet war requirements will be much appreciated by members,” the report states, "and it is hoped that it will be possible for this extension to be made to apply throughout the whole of the war period.” The report records the union's thanks to the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, and to the New Zealand Workers’ Union representatives for their co-operative spirit.
