TOKIO ASSERTION
BOAST OF POWER LIMIT TO PATIENCE POSSIBLE EXPLOSION (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Aug. 14, noon.) TOKIO, Aug. 13. A Japanese spokesman, Mr. Hideo Hiraide, said to the press to-day: “Now is not the time to fuss over whether Japan should enter the war. The present is merely a calm before the storm and the people must be prepared.” He said that the Japanese were peace-loving, but there was a limit to their patience, after which there would be an explosion. M. Hiraide warned opposing nations to avoid under-estimating Japan’s strength. “If they make that mistake, this will be inviting unfortunate results,” he declared. Japanese newspapers had warned Thailand not to accept British or American guarantees because nations which had done so were “now dead.” The press reiterated the chorus that Japan would not tolerate any Thailand submission to Britain. The Nichinichi Shimbun said it was for this reason that Thailand had declared her neutrality.
