SERVED IN TWO WARS
LIEUT.-COL. PIERCE DEAD PROTRACTED ILLNESS (Ptir Press Association.) HAMILTON, this day. Lieut.-Colonel Caro James Pierce, M.C.. E.D., died in Hamilton last night after a protracted illness. Colonel Pierce, who served on Gallipoli and was wounded in the Table Top engagement, on being promoted to commissioned rank served in the Palestine campaign and was awarded the Military Cross. Following the war he farmed at Paterangi. He took a keen interest in (he Territorial training and commanded the Waikato Mounted Rifles at the outbreak of the present war. He was in command of the Divisional Cavalry of the First Echelon, and after serving in the Western Desert was invalided home.
Ten days ago Colonel Pierce received a cable message from Major-General B. C. Freyberg expressing the sympathy of the troops in his illness. The message read: “1 send you kindest, remembrances and sympathy in your illness from all the members of the Divisional Cavalry, who remember the great work you did here in command of the Divisional Cavalry, and also my personal good wishes.”
