KOPUAWHARA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) The first night of the new series of five-hundred card evenings organised by the Women’s Institute for the benefit of local absent soldiers, was held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall, there being a creditable number present for so chilly an evening. Seven tables of players enjoyed a comfortable evening’s play, the prizes being won by Mrs. A. 6. K. Sim, who defeated Mrs. K. Partridge on the cut, and Mr. C. Tamm, who was also successful in cutting with Mr. A. Raos. A special prize was won by Master J. Solomon, Kaiangapipi, while the lucky number reward was presented to Mr. D. Peryer. A refreshing supper was served by the lady members of the committee.

The weekly tabic tennis handicap knoclYout tournament was won by Miss Lelty Pemberton in the women's section, and by Mr. Commons in the men’s. A 1 deiieidus home-made supper provided by the ladies completed a highly successful evening. Mr. Watkinson, inspecting engineer, Wellington, accompanied by Mr. O. G. Thornton, Gisborne, visited 'Kop.uawliara on Monday'.'—-Mr. and Mrs! J. Aylward departed permanently from Kopuawhara on Monday, to make their home in the vicinity of Taradale. Mr. Aylward, having resigned from the clerical staff of the Kopuawhara branch of the Public Works Department, intends taking up farming. Both Mr. and Mrs. Aylward will be greatly missed. —Mr. and Mrs. N. Dean and Douglas spent an enjoyable week-end in Gisborne. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Hart, after motoring to Auckland for a short visit, returned last week-end to their home in Kopuawhara.—Mr. and Mrs. ;H. A. Highct 'were recent visitors to Wairoa.—Mrs. O’Connel, and Miss O'Corinel, Opoutama, Mr. and Mrs. P C. Lynch, Paritu, and Mr. and Mrs W. Hardy, Paritu, were among recent visitors to Kopuawhara—Mr. R. Murray, WaikokopU,'Mr. B. Smith. Opoutama, Mr. L. F. Anderson, Kopua-whai-a, and Mr. A. Onkee, Waikokopu. were visitors' to Wairoa to attend a signalling school of instruction organised by the Wairoa Battalion of the Home Guard. —Mr. A. Reeves, Paritu, is visiting Wellington.—Mr. and Mrs. Conway, Kaiangapipi, ieft on Monday to reside in the Gisborne district.
