PROUD OF NAVY

CHEERS FROM TROOPS EVACUATION WORK TIRELESS ENERGY (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Per table .and Wireless Limited.) (Reed. June 5. 1.30 p.m.) CAIRO, June 4. “Every man of us is proud of the navy,” said a New Zealander on arrival from Crete. “The way they treated us—on land during the evacuation and aboard ship—was out on its awn. Nothing was trio much trouble. They supplied us with cigarettes and with everythirig we needed. It was just the same in the Greek show. We can never thank the navy enough.” The past month or two have been busy and tiring for the men in blue and white. Twice in quick succession they have been called, on to take up a huge and exacting task of evacuation, and each time they have done the job cheerfully and thoroughly. , All that time they have been floating targets for dive-bombers, and always they have acquitted themselves ihagnificently.

For many of therri it had been continuous duty on the alert all the timb. As the troops fded off the gangways on to the wharves seamen everywhere were doing what they «could to assist, sometimes almost carrying walking wounded to the waiting transport.

Weary as were the soldiers, they showed their appreciation. “Three cheers for the navy,” would be called, and up would go a roaring tribute to the senior service, whose watchfulness, grimness and tireless energy made the evacuation possible.
