Home Guard Signallers

At the conclusion of the field day held in Tolaga Bay during the weekend, Colonel G. S. Wilson, commanding officer of the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles, complimented the signalling section of the Homo Guard on its work during the day. This section was formed about three months "ago. and comprised mainly youths without telegraphic or signalling experience. Mr. H. F. Alen, of the Tolaga Bay Post Office staff, took control of the section, and under his guidance and by means of weekly classes, the members have attained a useful degree of expertness.—Special.

Children’s Cycle Deficiencies After a check over of 300 bicycles ridden in Gisborne by school children the resident A.A. patrol, Mr. G. V. Merton, reports that 80 per cent of the machines are deficient, and not up to the standard required by the association’s certificate of bicycle fitness. The certificates issued by the association, he explained, were designed to act as a guide for parents as to the worthiness of the bicycles in the light of the traffic regulations. The majority of the deficiencies were in regard to bells, many having fittings that would not ring. Of the 80 per cent a great number had loose cones, and some of the axles were even cracked or broken.
