REFUSE DISPOSAL
RAILWAY EXTENSION HIGH COST OF CONTROL "EXPENSIVE ACRE" Reference, to the necessity for fencing the dump at the approach to the railway station yards, made in the report of the town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, the Gisbognc Borough Council last evening gave rise to a discussion on the advisability of proceeding with the beautification of the site. It was suggested that the cost of fencing and possibly of bringing cover for dumped rubbish, might make the area an “expensive acre.”
The town clerk’s report stated that owing to satisfactory earth covering being at times unprocurable, difficulties were foreseen in meeting the requirements of the medical officer of health for refuse disposal at the station site. Arrangements had been made with Dr. J. K. L. Davies for tipping to cease when suitable covering was not available, which in all probability would arise during the summer. Temporary fencing to prevent illicit tipping was estimated to cost £3O. Strict Conditions Laid Down
Mr. F. Tolerton thought the council should hardly be required to spend £3O on the fencing, and in the course of discussion, Mr. E. R. Thomas, the borough engineer, stated that the medical officer of health had laid down strict conditions on which the dump could be used. Unless the council could control the tipping of refuse, and maintain a good cover of earth, it could not comply with Dr. Davies’ conditions. He suggested that the council might wish to reconsider the whole subject in relation to the matter of cost.
Several councillors demurred at any hasty action which might disturb plans for beautifying the approach to the railway station. It was suggested that the closing at night of the railway gates at the Peel street bridge, and at Grey street, would prevent illicit dumping, and save the cost of temporary fencing. The reserves committee was asked to consider the matter and report to the council.
