SHEPHERD WINS MEDAL
SHEEP SAVED FROM FIRE LONDON, May 31. An official description is given of how a shepherd won the British Empire Medal, says a British official wireless message. “Mr. Fred Mitchell is a shepherd,” says the Ministry of Information. “He is 45 years of age and has been head sK6i)herd on a north Somerset estate for 10 years. On January 3 of this year he was looking after lambing ewes at G. 30 p.m. when an air raid was made.
"Thousands of incendiary bombs were dropped and five actually fell on the lambing pens sheltering 34 e,wes and lambs. The pens, which were made out of wattle hurdles and straw, in a few seconds were blazing from end to end. Mr. Mitchell, who was alone, tried to put out the fire, but had to give up. “When the fire reached one ewe -nnd lamb he picked up the lamb and carried it to safety, with its mother ‘ following close behind. Mr. Mitchell eventually got out every sheep and lamb through the flames.” As Mr; Mitchell entered his home by the back door a bomb went off in the front garden and blasted the walls, windows and roof off his house.
