DECREASE OF £57,039

RAILWAY REVENUE

A decrease of £57,039 in the net revenue of the Railway Department is shown by the accounts for the first period ol' the year 1941-42,- compared with the corresponding portion of last year. The working profit was £135,551, against £192,590 in 1940. The Easter holiday traffic fell in the period this year, but not last. The gross revenue for the four weeks was £829,342, a decrease of £72.321, and the expenses were £693,791, a decrease of £15,282.

The operating profit on the North Island railways was £64,414, or £53,094 less than last year, while that in the South Island decreased by £6730 to £32,213. In the North Island gross revenue decreased by £63,561 to £442,240, and expenses by £10.467 to £377,826. In the South Island the revenue, at £267,287, was £18.439 lower and expenses were down by C 9709 to £235,074.

Net revenue from other than railway sources was £38.924 or £2785 more than last year. The gross revenue was £119.815 and the expenditure- £80,891.
