WOMEN AS DRIVERS

ARMY TRANSPORT TRUCKS “EXCELLENT SERVICE" (Per Pr»3B Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Girls of the Women’s National Service Corps are regularly driving army transport vehicles when called upon, and during the past few weeks have been crouched over the wheels of heavy lorries or negotiating traffic in six-wheeler trucks with the greatest efficiency. The service is voluntary. Last week a convoy of 15 trucks arrived in the city with female drivers. Military experts say the girls are giving excellent service. Members of the corps also are being employed as cooks at Waiouru camp.

“VERY GOOD SHOWING”

WOMEN AT AIR STATIONS (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. “The admission of women to the Royal New Zealand Air Force training stations is, according to the results of the experiment at Rongotai, proving most satisfactory,” the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, said to-day.

The purpose behind the move, stated the Minister, was to release men engaged on ground duties who were anxious to serve in any capacity overseas. The women were drawn from the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, formed early this year, and at present over 100 were working at Rongotai, where they had been from three to four weeks.

“They are mainly engaged in staff and office work and,” said the Minister, “are making a very good showing indeed. As a result of the success of the experiment a number of women have just started at Harewood, and a further extension of the scheme will be made where practicable.”
