HISTORIAN’S DEATH

MR. HERBERT BAILLIE VETERAN FREEMASON (Per Press Association./ WELLINGTON, this day. The death is announced of Mr. Herbert Baillie, who from 1904 to 1927 was chief librarian at Wellington and for many years hon. secretary and treasurer of the New Zealand Libaries’ Association. He was an authority on the early history of Wellington, which he had done much to record, as well as the history of New Zealand as' a whole. Owing to his voluntary efforts, the. Transactions of the New Zealand Institute contain much valuable information that otherwise would have been lost. A veteran freemason, he was one of the 33 founders of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand who were honoured at the jubilee gathering at Christchurch in April last year. He was much more than a formal custodian of books, and was one of Wellington's best known and best beloved citizens.
