COUNCIL’S SYMPATHY
BEREAVED FAMILIES SERVICE TO BOROUGH Sympathy with former members of the council or with families of those who had served it was expressed at last night’s meeting of the Gichorne Borough Council in regard to bereavements suffered since the previous meeting. Reference was made to the deaths of Mrs. John Jackson, wife of a former Mayor, of Mrs. G. B. Oman, wife of a former councillor, Mr. H. M. Porter, who for 40 years was returning officer for the council, and of Mr. Hugh Anderson, a member of the staff several years ago. In moving motions of condolence, the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that Mrs. Jackson, although of a retiring disposition, did all she could in successfully carrying out the duties of Mayoress, earning the respect of all who knew her. Mrs. Oman, too, earned the highest respect of the people of Gisborne. Besides being returning officer for the Gisborne Borough Council for 40 years, Mr. Porter also held a similar post for other local bodies, Mr. Coleman added, and he took an active part in many public and semi-public bodies. Mr. Anderson was a member of the council's staff prior to the 191418 war, after which lie returned to the councils employ resigning later to leave Gisborne.
