STRONG MARKET
WEANER CATTLE SALE TOO HOT FOR VISITORS STEERS SELL. TO £4/5/BEEF SECTION STEADY The market for weaners on the first day of this week's Matawhero Cattle Fair to-day was particularly strong, and values were generally ahead of those in paddock sales recently. Passings were very few. Visiting buyers usually found the pace too hot. and those who attended from the Waikato and the Bay of Plenty took only a small pari of the offering, dealing mainly in heifers. As a rule, northern buyers take the greatest part of the yardings when values are more favourable to them than they were to-day. The store cattle section to-day was confined to weaners, of which there were about 2000, the offering up to lunch totalling 1385. During the luncheon interval 207 beef cattle were put under the hammer. Of the weaner offerings before lunch. !)sf) were of steers. Tney were mainly in good conditions, with very few undersize lines. Prices in two instances exceeded £4, both being Herefords, which sold at £4 4s and £4 ss. the top price being secured by Messrs. D. and M. Campbell. Several other pens ranged from £3 14s to £3 18s, with other fairly good sorts from £3 to £3 IDs. The pens which sold below £2 10s were the exception, and only one went below £2, this being for a pen of small and fairly ligh l steers at £1 14s. The heifers disposed of before lunch totalled 400. While values here were generally satisfactory to vendors, the market for the females was not so strong as for the steers. The best ct them sold from £1 18s to £2 Is and others with fair size down to £1 10s. with small at £1 2s (id.
