WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
KORANGA The April meeting ol the Koranga 'VomenT Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Judd, the attendance being small The motto for the month was "Wisdom is knowing what to do; virtue is doing it." An invitation was received from the Matawai institute to its birthday party, on May 8. Wool for patriotic work was distributed among members, and it was decided in future to devote the social half-hour to patriotic work. OPOUTAMA Tim Aoril meeting of the Opoulama. Women’s Institute was held in the picture hall, Mrs. Aiton presinding over a good attendance. Visitors present were Mrs. W. Tombleson; Misses J. and Cl. Macrae, ,J. Brown and D. Ash. The motto for the month was "Peace on Earth and Goodwill towards men.”
An invitation was received from the Kopuawhara institute to attend its birthday meeting. Mrs. Short was chosen as the delgate to attend the Wairoa federation council meeting. A committee was arranged of members who were available to dispense tea at the Home Guard parades. Mrs. Tombleson addressed the meeting with a view to forming first aid classes. The roll call was “Suggestions for the New Programme, or 3d fine.”
The monthly competitions resulted: -uuly ,Buckleton's Cake, from the Eggless Recipe Book.—Mrs. Aiton, 1; Mrs. iharman, 2; Mrs. Lancaster, 3. Mason jar of flowers. —Mesdames Lancaster and Rarcre, 1; Mrs. Gemmell, 2; Mrs. Aiton, 3. Cushions. —Mrs. J. H. Bowen, 1; Miss Small, 2. Mrs. Russell Hughes was the winner of a rnysery parcel, which was donated by Mrs. Lancaster. The hostesses were Mesdames Brown and Foster.
MAUNGARONGO Tlie latest meeting of the Maungarongo Women’s Institute was held in Mrs. Richardson's tea rooms on April 23. The meeting, which was attended by eight members and several members from the Hinetapora institute, was presided over by Mrs. R. Walker. A welcome was extended to the visitors, and Mrs. Tuheke and Mrs. Tawaho, qh behalf of the visitors, suitably replied. An account on the council meeting was given by the president. The motto for the day was "Many Happy Returns.” One new member, Mrs. Bowler, was enrolled. Prizes for the last 12 months were presented by Mrs. Walker to the following:—Sewing.—Mrs. R. Te Rauna, 1; Miss M. Ehau. 2; Mrs. ,P. Kaiwai and Mrs. M. Tuhou, equal, 3. Cooking.—Mrs. R. Te Rauna. 1; Miss M. Ehau, 2; Mrs. R. Walker, 3. Maori Art. —Mrs. M. Tuhou. 1; Miss M. Ehau, 2. Blooms. —Mrs. R. Walker, 1. Birthday greetings from the executive of tiie Poverty Bay Federation were read, as this meeting' was also the second birthday of the institute. A home-made birthday cake, which was made and iced by two of the institute members. Miss M. Ehau and •Mrs. P. Kaiwai, and decorated by Mrs. Russell, took pride of place on the tea table. The president lit the two blue candles, and'Mrs. Tawaho blew them out. The honour of cutting the cake fell to Mrs. Tawaho. assisted by Mrs. MefTan. The competitions, which were judged by Mrs. MefTan and Mrs. 'Bowler, resulted: —Balaclavas.—Miss H. Tawhena. 1: Miss Annie Walsh, 2. Blooms. Chrysanthemum. —Mrs. R. Te Rauna, 1. Cooking, Plain Madeira Cake.—Mrs. P. Kaiwai, 1. MAKARAKA-MATAWHERO The Makaraka-Matawhero institute celebrated its ninth birthday on April 2 and had as their guests members of the Patutahi institute. Mrs. Livingston welcomed all guests and members and said she believed such meetings were helping to bind the bonds of friendship between the women of the country, especially in such vital times as these. It was an inspiration for more mutual self and friendship. A short programme of items, songs by Miss Leonie Binder, dancing by the Misses Riley, and a recitation by Mrs. Dempsey was presented. Afternoon tea was served in the dining room, i lie hostesses being tlie committee. A birthday cake baked and given by the president took pride of place. Mrs. Stevens, president of the Patutahi institute. lit the candles. Mrs. W. J. Parker vice-president, Makarakn, blew them out, and Mrs. Baty cut the cake. Competitions caused a lot of amusement. Mrs. Wilcox was presented with Uhi garden circle silver cup and miniature for most points in flowers during tiie year, and Mrs. Livingston emerged the winner of the best bloom competition, Mrs. Wilcox being second. Mrs. Barry read a letter from the link in Worcester which was very interesting. Community singing was enioyed with Mrs. Riley as accompanist. Thanks were expressed by Mrs. .Stevens for the happy time they had spent.
The president then presented Mrs. O’Meara with a gift in appreciation of her devoted service as secretary. A vote *of thanks was passed from the institute to Mrs. Livingston tor a cake. Both were accorded musical honours.
TUM The monthly meeting of the tuai Women’s Institute was held in the Tuai Hall, the president, Mrs. Godman, presiding over a good attendance of members. One new member joined. A competition was won by Mrs. Blair. Members arc working for the Lady Galway Guild, and also knitting for the forces and sending soldiers’ parcels overseas. Competitions resulted:— Handwork, coloured faneywork table centre.—Mrs. C. Dawson, 1: Mrs. Nicol, 2. Cooking, shortbread for soldiers’ parcels.—Mrs. Lough, 1; Mesdames Stoupe and Rosenberg, equal, 2; Mrs, Nicol. 3. Bowl of autumn flowers.—Mrs. Nicol, 1; Mrs. Brumstead, 2. HINETAPORA The monthly meeting of the Hinetapora Women’s Institute was held on Thursday, April 24, the president, Mrs. Milner, presiding over an attendance of 12 members. Mrs. P. Whaipooti, delegate to the annual council meeting in Gisborne, gave a concise report and was heartily thanked.
A “bring and buy” is to be held in ■the Tawheorangi Hall on May 10.' Two visitors were welcomed. Mesdnmes Meffan and Bowler. A hearty vote of thanks was extended to Mrs. Bowler for her interesting talk. The hostesses were Misses T. Hauraki and K. Fox. RUATORIA Interest in the preparation of field dressings has been shown by members f the Ruatoria Women’s Institute at heir last two meetings. The subject was introduced by Mrs. J. H. Taplin, and later Mr. A. J. H. Kirkham was able to give further information regarding the sizes of bandages required and what form the kit should take. zDespile the numerous calls on the histitute, a satisfactory credit was shown in the balance sheet after the .year’s activities. There was a good display of knitted goods at both meetings and they /ere remarked upon as being highly creditable to the women who devoted mo much of their time to that work. The election of officers resulted: — President. Mrs. Russell; Secretary, Mrs. Wicksleed; committee, Mesdames Burton, Dalgairns, Johnston, Burdctt, Ranson, Woodford, Smyth, and Boagey. WAERENGA-A-HIKA The latest meeting of the Waerenga-:>-hika Women’s Institute was held in he hall on April 22, being presided ;ver by Mrs. Barrow. There was a small but happy gathering. The president read the annual report, which stated that things were quite satisfactory. Work for soldiers had been freely done by members, and each member donated a little each month. The delegate to the council meeting gave a detailed account of the progress made during the year, and a vote of thanks was accorded her. Two members absent on account of sickness were greatly missed and were wished a .speedy recovery to health.
Mrs. Somerton read an interesting "Golden Thread” article on “The Streets of London,” which was keenly listened to. The roll call. "A Scotch •Joke.” was very amusing.

Foliage: Mrs. Carr. 1. The hostesses, Mesdames Hinton and Ingram, served a dainty tea.
