CAREER OF SERVICE
MRS. E. B. TAYLOR DEAD NOTED SOCIAL WORKER (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The death occurred in Dunedin yesterday morning of Mrs. Elizabeth Best Tdylor, J.P.. 0.8. E., widow of the late Mr. T. E. Taylor, a former member of Parliament and Mayor of Christchurch. Few women in New Zealand had a more distinguished career of public service than Mrs. Taylor, to whose foresight energy and goodwill many of the most useful organisations in the city owe much. Born in Lytelton 73 years ago. the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ellison, Mrs. Taylor was married in 1892. She associated herself with thepolitisa 1 and civil duties of her husband and was particularly interested in the lot of mothers and children. She was one of the founders of Christchurch free kindergartens and a prominent temperance worker. She was one of the early members of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and was Dominion president for a considerable time.
Mrs. Taylor was an enthusiastic member of the Pan-Pacific Women’s Association and chairman at the time of her death. She was vice-presi-dent of the Christchurch League of Nations Union. Mrs. Taylor also had served on the City Council. After her appointment as a justice of the peace she was one of the first women to sit in the Children’s Court as a magistrate’s associate. Mrs. Taylor is survived by four daughters, Mrs. C. R. Murray, Taumarunui, Mrs. Norman Page. Greymouth, Mrs. 11. L. Horwood. Dunedin, Mrs. R. G. T. Lewis, Wellington, and one son, Mr. E. B. E. Taylor, Greymouth.
