SENATOR SHEPPARD DEAD OLDEST CONGRESSMAN (Reed. April 10, 10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, April 9.

The death is announced of Senator Morris Sheppard, the oldest member of Congress and the sponsor of the national prohibition amendment. He died from slow haemorrhage into the brain as an aftermath of overwork and strain for several weeks.

Senator Sheppard was chairman of the Senate Military Affairs Committee and had charge of much of the important legislation under the defence programme including the United States first compulsory peace-time military training law.
