THE WEATHER

Last Night’s Forecast General Situation—An anticyclone centred off the New South Wales coast extends across the north Tasman Sea and beyond New Zealand. Forecast: Winds fresh but gradually decreasing south - westerly breezes later becoming variable in parts of Hie South Island. Seas: In New Zealand waters moderating but a southerly swell continuing, more especially on the East Coast. Eastern Tasman Sea: Fresh south-west to west winds and rather rough seas but wind and sea gradually moderating. Weather: Becoming fair or fine almost generally, a few isolated showers still likely however on the Southland coast and in the northern portion of the Auckland Peninsula. Temperatures: Cold, but slowly rising.

To-day's North Island Report

Temperatures were cool everywhere in the North Island at 9 a.m. to-day. and Gisborne, with 49 degrees, was one of the coolest spots on the East Coast, only Napier and Wellington, with 48 degrees, being lower. Light winds, generally from the south-west, were recorded at most stations, but Cape Reinga had a strong breeze from the south-west, with overcast; skies and snow within sight of the station. From Tiritiri southward, blue skies prevailed all the way to Wellington, with excellent visibility everywhere. Seas were smooth to moderate at alt stations. Midday Forecast General Situation. —A weak disturbance is passing to the south of the South Island while an anticyclone is moving on to northern New Zealand. Forecast: Light to moderate westerly winds. Weather: Fine and frosty night but milder day temperatures. Seas: Moderate but. decreasing southerly swell.
