TAUPO LAKE CONTROL

EXTRA GENERATORS NEW ARAPUNI UNITS EXTRA GENERATIONS (British Official Wireless.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister- of Public Works, the Hon. 11. T. Armstrong, who inspected the Taupo lake-level control works this week, is satisfied that this important water conservation scheme should be completed in time to provide an additional supply of water for the two extra generators which are to be installed at Arapuni hydro-electric station. These generators are expected to arrive at an early date.

The Minister explained to-day that (lie two penstock tunnels constructed many years ago with a view to future extensions are now being lined with steel and concrete.

“The six units at Arapuni,” said the Minister, “are at present working to capacity. Not a drop of water is flowing to waste over the spillway. But for the Taupo scheme to raise the level of the lake to store water until it is wanted, the additional generators could not be utilised, but the lakelevel works are so well advanced that I am satisfied on adequate water supply will be available for all eight generators by the time the two additional ones are installed.”
