Flag - Five-Hundred Party The Scout and Guide Hall presented an animated scene on Tuesday night, when lhe Mangapapa Girl Guide Hall Committee held a flag five-hundred party. Six tables were engaged and honours were annexed by Mesdames B. Johnson. Burch. Hurne and Mr. Jones. The highest number of flags were secured bv Mrs. Sutcliffe, and Mrs. C. Johnson emerged the winner of the travelling envelope competition, other prizes being awarded to Mrs. Steele and Mr. Jones.

The games were efficiently super vised by Mr. Jones, and supper wa served by the committee.

St. John’s Ladies’ Guild

On Tuesday afternoon Mrs. A. V. Clare presided over a small attendance of members at the monthly meeting of St. John’s Anglican Ladies’ Guild, held in St. John’s Church. Mangapapa. Most of the afternoon was devoted to the allocation of guild funds in regard io church work, a certain sum also being set aside towards the repainting of the church.

Arrangements were made for a card party to be held in the Seoul and Guide Hall on April 29. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Wallace and Van Sligh. Mesdames L. Steele and R. C. Willis were appointed as hostesses at the next meeting, which will take place on May 13.

The Rev. N. Drake was warmly wel corned as a visitor.

Party for Bride-Elect

On Tuesday night Mrs. K. Crarer entertained at her home in Hinaki street for Miss Molly Foster, whose marriage to Mr. A. Holmes will take place next week. The drawing-room was gay with mixed flowers in rich autumn tonings. the artistic decorative note being repeated in the dining-room, where sunper was served. Bridge was enjoyed by the guests, and the prize for the highest score was won by Mrs. .J. Croshie, Miss P. De Costa emerging the winner of Ihc hidden number competition. The hostess wore a smart frock of black satin accented with a diamante belt and shoulder clip. A becoming frock of fuchsiacoloured velvet with ruched trimmings was the choice of Miss. Foster. Among the guests were Mesdames B. Dallas, j. Crosbie.'J. M. Dorreen, R. B. Veitch. P. W. Barlow and C. D. Armstrong; Misses E. Matthews, D. Barton. P. De Costa, M. Walton. H. Veitch and D. Adams.

Successful Dance at Tiniroto Gratifying success attended the dance held by the Tiniroto Patriotic Committee in the Tiniroto Hall on Saturday night. Decorations of red, while and blue streamers provided an effective setting for the animated scene, the many guests thoroughly entering into the spirit of the occasion. The music was supplied by Mr. T. Witten, and extras were contributed by Mesdames R. Spence and V. Noble-Campbell and Miss T. McGonigal. A competition waltz was won by Mrs. R. Spence and Mr. T. Cooper. A delicious supper was served informally by the lady members of the committee.

Concert at Ormond

An audience that taxed the capacity of the Ormond Hall greeted the' performers at the very successful concert organised by Mr. F. Mcßreen and Miss I. Sharpies, under the auspices of the dramatic circle of the Ormond Women’s Institute on Saturday night. The members ef the concert party who journeyed from Gisborne to present the programme were given an enthusiastic reception, and each item met with a well-merited encore. At the conclusion of the entertainment Mrs. C J. Long, convener of the drama circle, thanked the organisers the performers and all who had contributed to the success achieved. She also expressed warm appreciation o) the support accorded the effort. The organisers and the performers were entertained later at supper by the members of the dramatic circle in the Women’s Institute room.

The proceeds of the concert are to be equally divided between the Women’s Institute room and patriotic funds.

Miss Jocelyn Burgess; recitation, Miss Eva Grant; song and tap, Miss Lorna Sheen: whistling solo, Mrs. A. C. Coleman; Sean Truibhais, Mr. Pat Haycock; humorous song, Mr. Mick Thodey; harmonica solo, Mr. Jack Allen: recitation, Miss Marie Mcßreen; tap dance. Miss Betty Forshaw; sketch, "Geese,” Mesdames Cram and Grayson; dance, Miss Mary King; sketch, "Big Steamers," Misses Phyllis Pardoe and Marie Barber; tap troupe, Miss Shaples’ pupils. The duties of anannouncer were carried out by Mr. Mcßreen.

Shaded dahlias and galliardias were artistically arranged by Mrs. P. S. Sim at her home in Ormond road recently, when she gave a delightful "miscellaneous” gift party for Miss Pat Tooman, whose marriage to SergeantPilot R. Sim, Royal New Zealand Air Force, will take place shortly. Competitions, games and community singing were enjoyed by the guests. A savoury supper was served informally, and later the bride-to-be was toasted with musical honours The opening of the parcels revealed an assortment of attractive gifts, for which Miss Tooman thanked her friends in a happy manner.

Among those present were Mesdames M. Smith and Thomas; Misses Sim (3). E. Robinson, Salt. St. Clair, La Gros. Glasgow, N. Redstone. McDonald. Candy, Hume, Burnell, and Edwards.

Informal Gift Party

On Saturday night. Miss Pat Tooman whose marriage to Sergeant-Pilot R. Sim, Royal New Zealand Air Force, will take place shortly, was the chief guest at a delightful gift party given by Mrs. M. Smith at her home m Clifford street. Cosmos and galliardias decorated the studio, and a delectable supper was served in the flower-decked drawing-room. Several competitions provided entertainment, and the winners, Misses Tooman. Beale, and T. and ,J. Sim. vere suitably rewarded. The bride-to-be assisted by Miss Sim, opened the parcels, and thanked her friends for their gifts. Among the guests were Mesdames Underwood. Sim and Smith; Misses M.. T., and ,T. Sim. Beale, Davies, Underwood, and Mclntosh. All-Day Croquet Tournament Delightful surroundings and ideal weather conditions contributed to the success of the all-day progressive tournament organised by the Turanga Croquet Club for the entertainment of the Gisborne and Poverty Bay clubs. The response to the invitation was most gratifying, and the well-kept greens, in their picturesque garden setting, presented an animated scene.

The highest number of points in the A Grade was secured by Mrs. W. E, Chamberlain, and Mrs. J. W. Kaneemerged the winner of the B Grade, a further prize being awarded to Mrs. Shaw.

Both morning and afternoon tea. and also luncheon were served in the pavilion, delphiniums and dahlias in blue and red tonings, the club colours, being used with artistic effect in the decoration of the table. Mesdames A. J, Barnard, A. E. Moncrieff and F. E. Ormiston were responsible for the catering arrangements. and the tournament was supervised by Mesdames R. L. Gray, T. Bayliss and Ansell. Victoria League

The monthly meeting of the Victoria League, held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms on. Monday afternoon, opened with a prayer for the New Zealand troops in Greece. The chair was taken by Miss A. L. Rees.

A letter was read from Miss Drayton. headquarters secretary, London, telling of a visit Sir Cyril Newall had paid to the King George and Queen Elizabeth Victoria League Club in London for overseas servicemen, and of the enthusiastic welcome he had received from those present, especially members of the Royal Air Force. One new member, Mrs. Marsicano, was elected

It was decided to make the usual donation of £2 2s to the St. John Ambulance appeal. Mrs. P. Hockley, who represented the league at the recent meeting sponsored by the Women’s War Service Auxiliary, presented her report and explained the objects of the organisation. She also appealed to members to sign the forms she had procured for them. A report on the Wednesday sewing circle, read by Mrs. Hockley, stated that in one year 2000 articles for soldiers had been made and 300 tins filled with boracic powder and medical requirements. On the motion of Mrs. L. Cotterill, a whrm vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Hockley and her band of workers on the outstanding success of their activities. A report on the “white elephant" sale held in the City Hall on April 4, to raise funds for the evacuee sewing circle, was given by the organiser. Mrs. W. Oakden. whose announcement that £2OB 15s had been realised to date was greeted with acclamation. Plans for the annual entertainment of the early settlers on Empire Day were discussed and the usual arrangements. in co-operation with the various local women’s societies, were made.
