“White Elephant” Memento
In a report of tho outcome of the "white elephant" sale conducted last week on behalf of the Victoria League effort to clothe some of the babies in Britain’s bombed cities, it was stated that a presentation had been made to the organiser, Mrs. W. Oakden, by those who helped in the effort. Mrs." Oakden explains that this statement was inaccurate. Included among the articles donated for sale was a white china tea-pot in the shape of an elephant, and the appropriateness of this ornament as a memento of a “white elephant” sale was recognised by two of the women assisting in the arrangement and display of the stock. When it was offered for sale, bids were slow, and the lot was bought in at 9d by two of the assistants. It was then handed to Miss J. Oakden, to be kept as a family memento of the occasion.
