DARTON FIELD
AREA FOR EXTENSION OWNERS NEGOTIATE COMPENSATION ISSUE An offer to settle their claim for compensation in connection with land taken for the extension of Darton Field aerodrome was received by the Gisborne Borough Council last evening from the solicitors of the late owners of the land, Misses Tucker. “We have now received instructions from our clients to communicate further with you on the matter,” the solicitors for the owners wrote to the council. “You will recollect that when we were last jn correspondence with you on this matter —in June of last year—a proposal was made by you that the local bodies concerned should pay as compensation the Government valuation of the land existing prior to the new valuation made in 1929. That valuation was the one made in 1928, amounting to £3748 for the area of 139 acres 2 roods 10 perches, being the area covered by the proclamation taking the land. Although our clients were then favourably disposed towards this offer, they decided not to proceed further with the matter at that juncture, and under their instructions we wrote withdrawing our offer which had been made on that basis. "The Misses Tucker have now reconsidered the position fully, and have decided that in order to save the expense and delay attaching to proceedings in the Compensation Court, they are prepared to settle their claim on the basis of the 1928 valuation, as set out above. On their behalf, therefore, we offer to accept settlement of their claim for compensation at the sum of £3748.”
On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., the letter was referred to the finance committee for consideration. i
