WAIROA LABOURER CRIME AGAINST GIRL (l’nr Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Remarking that if the prisoner had been older the sentence would have been more severe, the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, in the Supreme Court 10-day sentenced Nuki Hodges, aged 22, a labourer, to three years’ hard labour for unlawful carnal knowledge. His Honour said the evidence showed the o I fence to which the prisoner had pleaded guilty at Wairoa really amounted to rape for whicli a person was liable to imprisonment for life and a Hogging. For unlawful carnal knowledge the maximum sentence was five years, but lie considered, in view of the prisoner’s youth, three years would meet the circumstances, though he had some doubt as to its sufficiency.
