STALKER SHOT
MISTAKEN FOR DEER BULLET IN HEAD COUNTRY TRAGEDY A deerstalker was shot dead in heavy scrub and fern between Lake Rotoehu and Hongi’s Track on Saturday afternoon when he was mistaken for a deer by another sportsman. The victim was:— Mr. James Gordon Dryland, aged 29. married, of Rotorua
Accompanied by Mr. H. J. Peat, Mr. Dryland tramped over rough country from the Maniatutu road, and after leaving his companion set off along a ridge blowing a horn to induce the stags to roar. Unknown to either of them, another deerstalker, Mr. David Hoffman, of Rotoiti, was climbing the same ridge
When about 35yds. from the top Mr. Hoffman noticed a movement in the fern and stepped behind a tree. Almost immediately he heard a roar as of a stag and noticed something brown move ■ in the scrub. He fired two shots, one of which struck Mr. Dryland in the head, killing him instantly.
The police had difficulty in removing the body on account of the rough nature of the country. An inquest was opened before the coroner and adjourned sine die.
