BREMEN ON FIRE
• GIANT NAZI LINER OUTBREAK IN DOCK CAUSE NOT ASCERTAINED TIME OF BRITISH RAID (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Mar. 18, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Mar. 17. It is officially admitted by the Germans that the famous transatlantic liner Bremen is on fire in a German port.
D.N.8., the official German news agency, stated that fire broke out on the Bremen on Sunday and efforts to suppress it had not been successful. The cause of the fire, it was stated, had not been ascertained, but it will be recalled than on Thursday the Royal Air Force carried out a raid on Bremen, where the liner has been lying.
A Berlin message to-day stated it was officially reported that a fire, the origin of which was not disclosed, broke out in the Bremen yesterday and was still burning. The Bremen’s whereabouts were no revealed.
Earlier in the war this Norddeutscher Lloyd liner, of 51,600 tons, passed within torpedo range of the British submarine Salmon while off Norway on her way from New York to Germany via Murmansk. International law, however, prevented the Salmon from sinking her as she was not in a position to give her the necessary warning.
