EFFECT OF STRIKES

DELAYING DEFENCE ROOSEVELT CRITICAL NEED FOR MEDIATION (Reed. March 8, noon.) WASHINGTON, March 7. President Roosevelt to-day told a press conference that he. was absolutely opposed to jurisdictional labour strikes which were holding up several phases of the national defence. Mr. Roosevelt feels that the country as a whole will not approve in any shape or form a jurisdictional strike such as the American Federation of Labour walk-out at Dayton, which slowed down most important work in the Wright field expansion programme. Mr. Roosevelt added that he had not found a solution, but he was convinced of the necessity for establishing overall Federal mediation mechanism to handle problems of labour.
