VIOLENT RIOTS

DUTCH WORKERS AMSTERDAM CLASHES GERMANS OPEN FIRE JEWS ATTACK NAZIS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—Unitod. Pross Assn.) (Reed. March 1, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 28. The German radio stated that German troops were called out in Amsterdam to disperse Dutch workmen demonstrating at the railway station. The soldiers opened fire when the workers refused to disperse. Several were killed and wounded. The Dutch rioters also assaulted German military patrols in the streets of Amsterdaih. The soldiers again were forced to use firearms. Several were killed and wounded. The Vrijnederland gives details of the fights between Jews and Dutch Nazis in Amsterdam, which is now under martial law as a result of young Jews attacking uniformed storm troopers marching through the ghetto. Twelve civilians and two policemen were injured and one Nazi is dead.

German officials announced that eight were killed and 40 wounded. Large numbers were arrested. The police have isolated a large part of Amsterdam to prevent further demonstrations. Jewish leaders have exhorted the Jews to show calm and dignity whatever the provocation. General Winkelmann, General van Voorst and Jonkheer Roel, a former representative of Queen Wilhelmina in North Holland, were interned at Troppau, on the Moravian-Bohemian frontier.
