WEAK BATTING

CANTERBURY AHEAD 232 FOR 8 WICKETS WELLINGTON MAKES 164 REPRESENTATIVE GAME (Per Tress Association.) WELLINGTON, this day._ Though conditions were ideal for run-getting, weak batting marked the opening day’s play in the return cricket match between Wellington and Canterbury representative elevens at the Basin Reserve yesterday. Wellington, in the first innings, could only scrape IG4 runs together, 11. W. Osborn and T. L. Pritchard, who both reached ’the forties, being the only batsmen , to show confidence against the quick bowling changes rung on by the Canterbury captain, F. P. O’Brien. Mapplebeck proved himself a good fast bowler by taking five wickets for 59 off 13.5 overs. Canterbury fared little better than Wellington on going to the wickets, and, when stumps were drawn, had lost eight wickets for 232 runs. I. B. Cromb and W. McD. Anderson both reached the sixties, but a spirited stand by A. Burgess and B. C. Harbidge redeemed the innings by putting on 57 runs for the eighth wicket. Pritchard and Ashenden bowled well for Wellington, but the side would have fared better had the captain, W. E. Norris, given his slow bowlers. Morgan and Duffy, an over or two. The match will be continued to-day. Scores: WELLINGTON.—First Innings H. W. Osborn, c Harbidge, b Anderson 43 O. L. Wrigley, b Mapplebeck .. f W. Burton, c Cromb. b Mapplebeck 3 R. T.
