NEEDED FOR ARMY
MANY MOTOR TRUCKS ACQUISITION PLANNED (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Steps are being taken throughout New Zealand by the Government to impress a large number of trucks for the use of the Army Department as a preliminary to large-scale manoeuvres and the possible mobilisation of defence forces. The trucks are to be purchased in the immediate future. It is understood that the owners will have the right to object to the valuations. The vehicles likely to be taken are flat topped trucks of models not earlier than 1937. As the first manoeuvres are to be in the southern, military districts, trucks will be taken over in the South Island within the next few weeks. “The Government has been very reluctant to take this step and has investigated every other avenue for acquiring the required number of trucks,” said Brigadier Bell to-day. “If the Government’s measures for the defence of the country are to be carried out properly, serviceable motor vehicles must be made available to service the military forces,” he added.
