FALSE FIRE ALARMS
HIGHER PENALTIES URGED ‘AUCKLAND BOARD (Por Trass Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The opinion that the punishment meted out to offenders convicted of giving malicious false lire alarms was inadequate was expressed by the Auckland Fire Board. The superintendent stated that five such alarms were given during the month and that one conviction was secured, the magistrate imposing a £5 fine. Captain Judson said the punishment in such cases was inadequate. People who deliberately gave false alarms were needlessly risking life and wasting the ratepayers’ money. Offenders should be imprisoned. The chairman, Mr. J. J. Kingston, said the board had repeatedly asked for heavier penalties. It was decided to support the action of the Fire Officers’ Association in pressing for higher penalties.
