■U.S. POLITICAL PARTIES ELECTION CAMPAIGN (Read. Feb. 26, 9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 25. The Senate Campaign Investigating CcmmKtee reported to-day that the major parties spent .£5,679.250 on the 19-19 election. The Republican Party spent £4,153,000 and the Democrat Party £1.523,750. The Hatch Act did not succeed in preventing the expenditure of enormous -urns. v The committee found that the £1250 "mit for individual contributions was Ineffective because the gifts were pread over -State or local committees, hus the following gifts were legal: Duponts £46.750. Pews £27.250. and Rockefellers £14,750. Both parties legally used the device of making loans to the various State ?.r.d local committees to avoid the Hatch Act. The highest loans were to Illinois, £62.500; to New York. £43,750; md to New Jersey, £25,000, made by Mr. R. J. Reynolds, who is now treasurer of the Democratic National Committee.
