HOME GUARD UNITS GISBORNE BATTALION NEW COMPANY FORMED APPEAL FOR RECRUITS New enrolments in the Home Guard which became available for posting to units last evening totalled G2, and the opportunity offered by this substantial accretion was taken to institute another combat company. This is E Company of the Gisborne Borough Battalion, and it is expected that the strength of the new unit will grow steadily. In to-day’s issue of the Herald there is published an appeal for further recruits for the Home Guard as a means of defending this district in the event of an emergency arising through enemy action. A number of Herald advertisers have combined to make, the space available to the Home Guard organisation, and an important feature of the announcement concerns the points at which enrolment forms may be obtained.
These comprise the Herald office, Crawford’s Pharmacy, Ball and Crawshaw, the Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association’s offices, Fitzmaurice and Butler, C. Jackson, opposite the Town Clock, H. Miller, in the Town Clock block, and the Gisborne Borough Council’s offices. It is pointed out that over 350 men are required for guard and picket duties in Gisborne alone, and that no age limit is placed upon the acceptance of enrolments for this duty. Younger men will be admitted to the combat units, and there are also transport, motor-cycle, and engineering units which offer interesting opportunities of service in emergency. The Home Guard committee is anxious to make every citizen conscious of, the message: “There’s a job for you in the Home Guard. Join the Home Guard —not sometime, but now!”
