ATTEMPTED BRIBERY
SINGALESE FINED £SO £IOO FOR BOOKMAKING Pleas of guilty were entered by a native of Ceylon, Bert Simon, aged 46, of Morrinsville, to charges of offering a bribe to a police constable to induce him to forgo his duty, and of bookmaking. Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson said that a small note-book bearing the words, “Just a little extra service from Bert Simon” was placed in Constable J. McMullan’s car. When the constable examined the book he found it contained a £lO note. The accused was found accepting bets in a hotel and a billiard saloon. He had been previously convicted for a 'breach of the Gaming Act. When Simon was questioned about the money by' Constable McMullan, he said, “Why don’t you keep it and say nothing about it.” On the charge of attempting to bribe, the accused was fined £SO, and for operating as a bookmaker, £IOO.
