EWES REACH 32/6

FAIR AT MATAWHERO SEASON’S TOP PRICE VALUES GENERALLY FIRM MIDDLE AGES EASIER The season's top ewe price and the highest in the Matawhero yards for some time was reached at the fourth Matawhero Ewe Fair to-day, when a pen of exceptional two-tooths on account of Mr. W. Turnbull, Ngatapa, was sold at 32s 6d, after being passed in at 31s 3d. Tiiis was the outstanding pen of young sheep in the yards, although there were some other well-grown sorts, the number being greater than at the previous fair. Well-grown twotooths sold from 24s 3d to 265, with other fairly good types from 22s Id to 235, while small to medium sorts ranged from 17s 8d to 19s 4d. Several pens were passed in. although some were sold afterwards. Over 1600 twotooths were offered up to noon. The total yarding was between 10,000 and 12,000, of which 7300 were offered by noon. The yarding comprised, in addition to some good two-tooths, consignments from back - country stations. The market generally was firm, particularly for two-tooths and the older sheep, although for middleaged the demand was erratic with an inclination to ease. Under 500 four-tooth ewes were in the offerings up to noon, a well-framed line from Messrs. Hutchinson Bros, reaching 225, while other prices ranged from 16s 2d to 20s 2d. A pen of small two and four-tooths sold at 17s Bd, and a line of six-tooths from Hutchinson Bros, brought 19s. A small pen of four-year-olds reached 16s 3d, and four and five-year ranged from 10s 3d to 14s.

Five-year-old sheep were in small numbers, prices ranging from 10s to 15s, while six-year-olds sold from 8s 9d to 12s 7d. There were 2250 mixedaged sheep in the larger pens, the highest price being 17s 3d for four, six and eight-tooths, while a pen of six-tooth to five-year was passed at that figure. Sheep with fairly good frames up to five-year-old sold from 14s 6d to 15s 6d, and other prices ranged from 10s Id to 12s 7d. A pen of aged ewes was passed in at 11s 3d.
