WAINUI PLATOON
HOME GUARD UNIT PROJECT SUPPORTED A project to form a platoon of Home Guard trainees at Wainui was well received by a gathering of 30 residents of Wainui Beach last evening, when a meeting was held to discuss what form of service the area could give in relation to home defence. Colonel R. F. Gambrill, area commander of the Home Guard, attended the meeting in company with the Cook County sub-area commander, Mr. Roland Graham, and Mr. F. T, Robinson, secretary of the Cook County committee. Mr. H. C. Nolan was in the chair, and the meeting heard a short and keenly-interesting address from Colonel Gambrill on the need for training, and the particular responsibility of those living upon the coastline.
The meeting later decided to form a branch of the Home Guard, and it was estimated that a full platoon could be raised. A committee comprising Messrs. Leslie Cooper, chairman, K. Ferris, R. W. Berge, St. C. Keogh, H. C. Nolan and T. H. Bell was formed.
The possibility of Wainui residents already with the Home Guard’s Gisborne Battalion training with the Wainui platoon was raised, and it was decided to hold the first parade at the Wainui Hall at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25. This arrangement will permit all area residents to train with the platoon, without interfering with their weekly “Home Guard night’’ in town.
