FOOD AND GARDENING VISIT OF LECTURER (Humid Correspondent.) There was a small but keen representative gathering of women at the Matawai Women’s Institute room this week to listen to Miss Johnston’s lectures, the subjects chosen being:— Gardening, soils and fertilisers, preparing seed beds, propagating by slips and layering, colour schemes and controlling blights, and how to apply the knowledge gained in practice both in the flower and vegetable gardens. At the end of the session all enjoyed lunch in the hall. The afternoon session opened with a distribution of literature, the lecture being oir food values and the'art of preserving fruit and vegetables, including storage, bottling, drying and sorting. A much larger audience listened with increased interest at this session. Much useful advice, supplemented by recipes, was given by Miss Johnston, and-new ideas for the making of home-made implements-- for preserving were passed on. A hearty vote Of"thanks was accorded the lecturer. Patriotic Efforts During the luncheon hour, Mrs. W. L. Rutledge urged the need for a hillcountry co-ordinating committee to act as a third branch in the Waikohu County, to deal with patriotic matters. A motion to appoint Iwo representatives from each part of the district was carried unanimously. The following agreed to act: MatawaiKoranga, Mesdames W. L. Rutledge and IT. Bulst; Motu-Whararau, Mesdames IT. Twistieton and J. Quirk; Rakauroa-Otoko, Mesdames W. E. Shaw and G. Miller. Mrs Rutledge mentioned the number of parcels allocated to this end, and the share they should take in operating the patriotic shop in Gisborne. The tentative date for Matawai was March 24, and all assembled were ready to assist. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Rutledge for her helpful advice.
