LOCAL BODY POLLS

RECONSIDERATION URGED PROTEST FROM OTAGO (Per Press Assoeiation.) DUNEDIN, this day. A strong protest against the Government’s decision to hold the local body elections next May was voiced at a special meeting of the Otago Harbour Board when a resolution was carried asking the Government to reconsider the question in the light of the changed international position during the past six months.

Social and Dance A distinct air of gaiety pervaded the Cook Street Hall on Saturday night, when the Te Hapara Patriotic Sewing Circle held a most successful social and dance. There was a good attendance, and the programme was carried out under the direction of Mr. R. Kelly. Vocal solos were contributed by Miss R. Kelly and Masters L. Taylor and A. Davis, and Misses L. Mackay and N. Miller were heard in a pianoforte duet. The Kiwi harmonica band (Mr. Haywood), was responsible for several delightful numbers, and dance items were presented by Miss A. Sheilds, Irish jig, Miss R. Mclntosh, sailor’s hornpipe, Misses B. and M, Crawshaw, tap duo, and Miss M. Forshaw, song and dance. A pianoforte solo was given by Miss D. Atkins. The accompaniments were played, by Mrs. Berry and Miss Sharpies, and Mrs. Cleary and Mr. Worsfold provided the music for dancing, Community singing also was enjoyed. Mr. and Mrs. Morrison emerged the winners of a Monte Carlo contest, and a statue waltz was won by Miss M. Forshaw and Master A. Davis, Mrs. L. Sutherland winning a “mystery” competition. Supper was served informally by the members. The, proceeds of the function are to be devoted to the circle’s fund for providing parcels for overseas servicemen.
